In the chaos following, the lifeboats are separated. Paddy, Richard and Emmeline find themselves with no food and no water stuck in the middle of nowhere. After some time, the three come across an uncharted paradise, where Paddy quickly teaches the children fishing, hunting and building. After maybe a month or two, Paddy gets very drunk off a barrel of rum found on the island when they first arrive, and drowns in the middle of the night. Emmeline and Richard, now alone and very scared, move location and rebuild their island home.
Many years later, the two young teenagers have developed a very real home, but hormones and feelings between the two strain their friendship, until Richard, who is still very determined to reach San Francisco, is let down by Emmeline when a ship passes by the island and she does not light the signal fire.
Throwing her out of the home they had built together, Emmeline attempts to survive on her own but is hurt. After Richard finds her dying, he realizes how he really feels for her and manages to save her. Nature runs its course and their friendship turns into love as the couple learn about the facts of life, when Emmeline has a baby and does not understand why.
The iguana appeared throughout the film, and when herpetologist John Gibbons caught an early screening of the feature, he realized that the animal that kept popping up on the big screen wasn't a familiar one.
So he traveled to Fiji specifically, to the island of Nanuya Levu , where he discovered the Fiji crested iguana, an entirely new Fijian native. The actress won lost? Come on, Razzies. Staring at Shields every night apparently did rouse some feelings in Atkins; the duo had a brief romance while filming. Despite their early attachment, Shields and Atkins soon began bickering nonstop. I was always trying to get into a mood while she would be skipping off to joke with the crew.

For one thing, there's a group of native islanders on the other side of the island they're marooned on and they never even notice the two kids? Also, they have a boat, why don't they just fill it with food and stuff and try to make it back to civilization?

Trivia After seeing the movie, John Gibbons, a herpetologist reptile scientist at the University of the South Pacific, realized that the iguanas that appeared in the film were a distinct species that had never been seen or documented by scientists before.
Afterward, he visited Nanuya Levu, the Fiji island where the movie was made, and named the species the Fiji Crested Iguana. Goofs When Emmeline walks in the water she accidentally steps on a fish and gets sick. The fish that the movie shows is called Stone Fish and, in fact, if you step on one the venom will cause excruciating pain, shock, paralysis, tissue death and, if not treated within few hours, death. Emmeline doesn't seem to suffer from any of these symptoms and it seems it takes some time until Richard finds her.
