Located in Tricentennial Park, the Georgia State Railroad Museum features historic railcars, guided tours and train rides on either a steam locomotive or diesel locomotive. Old Fort Jackson is the oldest standing brick fort within Georgia, built in It attracts 50, visitors each and every year, and for good reason. The fort is named after a Georgian governor who freed Savannah from the British rule, and it was at one time one of the strongest fortifications in the entire United States, as it was built entirely of earth, then faced with brick and then topped off with a wooden platform. Additions were made to the fort during the War of , and it looks much the same today as it did at that time.
Built in the s, Fort Pulaski stands on an island in the river, between Savannah and Tybee Island. It was the first Confederate masonry fort to fall under Union cannon fire, which marked a turning point in military history. Over the years an array of stars, such as Oscar Wilde and Lillian Russell, have performed on stage with its electrifying shows making it a great place to enjoy a night out. One of the oldest synagogues in the States, Mickve Israel Temple was founded in by a group of 42 Sephardic Jewish immigrants who had arrived from London a couple of years earlier. Over the decades, the community and congregation flourished and relocated to their current site alongside Monterey Square in Now a National Historic Landmark, the building is a rare example of a Gothic-style synagogue with its tall central tower presiding over fine facades and other fetching features.
Besides exploring its attractive, light-filled interior, visitors can stop by its museum that focuses on the congregation and the role early Jewish settlers played in the founding of Savannah. Another historic place of worship that is well worth a visit is the First African Baptist Church, which lies just a short walk from the waterfront.
Thought to be the oldest African American congregation in the States, it was established in with the church built just under a century later. Aside from the fine features of its sanctuary and stained glass windows, visitors can hear how both free African Americans and slaves built the church and carved the pews. British troops seized Savannah as part of their American Revolutionary War efforts in They remained in the city, fending off American and French soldiers, until The city grew rapidly after the war, and by , the city had 24 squares. While some were lost to development, 22 remain, providing green spaces for picnicking and relaxing under the large oak trees. Savannah again became embroiled in military efforts during the American Civil War.
While battles weren't staged in the city, General William T. Sherman's Union army seized the city in December There he penned his famous telegram to President Abraham Lincoln, offering the leader all of Savannah's cotton, guns and other weaponry. While Sherman took so many of the city's resources, it was thankfully spared the destruction seen in Atlanta and, later, Columbia.
Savannah lost several key buildings, including the old City Market, during the s as developers tried to make way for parking lots and gas stations. Disappointed by the city's transformation, several local women created the Historic Savannah Foundation, pooling their money to preserve Davenport House.
In , they created a fund to purchase historic properties in danger of demolition. While several buildings fell to wrecking balls, many are still standing thanks to the foundation's work. Today, Savannah is the fifth-largest city in the state of Georgia.
