There isn't really anything as far as historical markers to tell you what took place. Thus you either have to read up beforehand and connect the dots, or go on a tour. However, it's still an interesting place to visit. Be sure and walk throughout the complex but the architectural design is also noteworthy. This is a very interesting landmark, and it's next door to the Kennedy Center, so you can't miss it!
It's beautifully situated beside the Potomac, but the building itself is a bit of an eyesore. Wish there was something outside of it to talk about the scandal, but I didn't see anything. Nice Little Giftshop - No public tours.
The famed Watergate hotel is a hotel and residence. It is not really open to the public, nor are tours given. However, I spent two afternoons walking around, enjoying the water fountains and the view.
The Watergate has a wonderful gift shop where you can get items with the hotel name on them. The irony of the Watergate is that Kennedy and Nixon will forever be linked in another way. The Watergate hotel is right next door; only a few feet from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Watergate hotel is located in Foggybottom, near Georgetown.
Just get directions to the Kennedy Center and look to the right no pun intended. Pretty neat to think you are standing in a place where much history happened. If you have heard about Watergate for many years since Nixon, this is it!! It is next to the Kennedy Center if you want to do a drive by, and next to the Watergate hotel if you want to get up close.

The break in to Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate, orchestrated by the Nixon Whitehouse, is memorialized here with the planning done in the old Howard Johnson's across the street now a residence for George Washington University. Time has marched on so there is not much to see other than a huge residential complex with offices scattered throughout. A few shops on the lower level with two pretty good restaurants on the south side.
Take a walk around the entire complex to get a sense of just how big this place really is, but don't expect much more. Friedman Capital is a D. The firm is planning to add high-end lifestyle options to the building such as a sports book, restaurants, urban athletic club, co-working office and a Nixon museum.
